It’s been a big year for Families In Transition and we would like to thank all of you who have supported us along the way. We are truly grateful to serve such a wonderful community of people. In addition to the Case Management and rental assistance that we’ve been providing for over two decades, here are a few highlights of what’s been going on at Families In Transition for the past year:
Families In Transition had a great time at the Human Race
Each year Families In Transition participates in the annual Human Race in order to raise money. The theme for 2015 was superheroes. We enjoyed getting to dress up and run alongside the community that we serve. This year we were able to raise over two thousand dollars, thanks to our excellent board members who organized the human race for us.
FIT Provides financial literacy classes to program participants
This year Families In Transition began providing our program participants with access to free Financial Literacy and Independence Program ( FLIP ) classes.
FLIP classes are specially designed to teach participants how to manage their budgets, calculate their income, take control of their credit, and save for the future. Here at FIT we believe in providing our participants with the tools they need to not only get housed but to stay housed long after their case with Families In Transition has been completed; being able to better understand ones budget is an important step towards accomplishing this goal.
Families In Transition provides free Thanksgiving meals to families in need
The holidays can be a particularly hard time for many of our families. For them to be able to have a big Thanksgiving meal with their loved ones, can provide them with much needed relaxation and family time. This year we were able to provide turkey dinners to over a dozen families in need. These dinners include a delicious turkey along with enough food to feed an entire family.
FIT would like to give a great big shout out to the “Turkey Guys” from Wellsfargo and Cardiff Pest Control who donated turkeys to our families.
Families In Transition participates in the Santa Cruz Gives campaign
Families can incur many unexpected costs when moving, and these costs are especially hard on families who are going from homelessness to moving into an apartment of their own. One of the most overlooked expenses is something as simple as cleaning supplies.
Most people already have vacuums, brooms, mops, etc. to take with them to their new homes; however, for homeless families this is not the case. That is why Families In Transition would like to provide move-in cleaning kits to our program participants. Not only would these kits help alleviate some of the stress of moving but they would also be a great first step at making a house feel like a home.
That is why Families In Transition is participating with Santa Cruz Gives to try to raise the funds necessary to supply our program participants with these valuable cleaning kits. You can view our page on Santa Cruz gives by visiting https://santacruzgives.org/nonprofit/families-in-transition/

Plans for the New Year
As you can see, 2015 has been a busy year for Families In Transition but there’s still much more excitement to come. Here are just a couple of our plans for 2016
Families In Transition will begin providing stable housing workshops in 2016
Stable Housing In Financial Training (SHIFT) workshops will focus on teaching program participants the do’s and don’ts of being a good tenant. SHIFT participants can expect to learn about how to better understand and follow the terms of their lease, as well as the importance of getting along with their neighbors and how to prevent situations that can lead to eviction.
FIT is looking forward to the 2016 Strawberry Festival
We had so much fun at the Strawberry Festival this year and can’t wait to do it again. We will be there with smiles on our faces and of course a giant strawberry for families to take pictures with
